Nebraska Elementary Kindergarten Students Visit Children's Services!
Look at all these smiling faces! The kindergarteners from Nebraska Elementary visited the Main Library today and listened to stories and sang songs about plants and flowers and other things that grow. They even helped tell the story of The Rose in My Garden, by Arnold Lobel. They also learned about the fun materials available in Children's Services, and they were able to explore the Early Learning Center. We hope they visit again, soon!

Reading Rocks! Discusses Prince Caspian
Yesterday, the Reading Rocks Homeschool Book Club met and discussed Prince Caspian, by C. S. Lewis. We had a dynamic discussion about characters -- which were our favorites, what qualities did they possess that made them appealing. We also talked about the setting of the story, and the differences between the setting of The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian.
Have YOU read Prince Caspian, or any of the Chronicles of Narnia series, by C. S. Lewis? We'd love to read your comments!

Art Out of the Box: Fiber Art
In January 2008, the Art Out of the Box kids met to discuss fiber arts. We talked about quilting, weaving and many other fiber arts. Then we worked together to create a quilt to donate to Project Linus. Each child (and even some adults) drew a picture on a square of muslin and then a volunteer put it all together. The finished product is pictured here. I think it turned out lovely and will make a child very happy!

Fun & Games at the Baby & Toddler Storytimes!
We had so much fun in Baby and Toddler Storytimes this morning! I took a lot of great photos - check them out on Flickr.
We played games like Pat-a-cake and Open, Shut Them and read wonderful books like Peek-a-Moo! by Marie Torres Cimarusti.
It is time to start thinking about the Summer Reading Program. Did you know that even the youngest babies can participate and earn great gifts? Just sign up and keep doing what you always do - read, sing, and share rhymes together!
You can register for the Summer Reading Program early online, but remember you can't start counting your reading time until June 2nd. Visit the Summer Reading Program website for more information.

Art Out of the Box: Photography
The Art Out of the Box group met this afternoon to learn about photography. After talking about some photography basics and discussing some great art, the kids took photos in the program room. Then everyone had a chance to go out and take a photo in the Children's Services department. We also made accordion fold photo collages of the car that the kids painted during the art cars program. It was a great way to end the Art Out of the Box series for this school year!
To see more photos from the Photography program, visit Flickr. If you would like to see photos from the other Art Out of the Box programs, check out these links: Wood Art, Traditional Crafts, Mail Art, African American Art and Art Cars. I still have photos of the Fiber Art program to put up, I'll do that soon!
