Paws to Read!

Come to the library and read a story to a book-loving dog. Trained therapy dogs will be here every week with their handlers -- and they want to listen to you read!

At the Main Library, we welcome back Morgan and Samantha and their handlers, who will be here on Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Readers will take turns as time allows.

Can't make it on Thursdays? Many branches also offer Paws to Read -- check out this video published by the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette about Paws to Read at the Little Turtle Branch.

Getting a Pet?

Getting your family's first pet can be a very exciting event, but it's also a big responsibility. Help your child prepare by checking out some books from the Library, like the ones in the My First Pet Library, published by the American Humane Association.

For more books about other kinds of "Firsts", like your child's first airplane ride, first sleepover, or first loose tooth, see our "Firsts" Booklist .

More people have dogs for pets than any other animal in the country!
Why?
Because they are loyal, loving companions.
Before you and your family choose a dog, visit the library to "bone" up on which dogs will make the best pet for you!

Paws to Read is a special program offered every Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Library and at various times throughout the month at some of our branches. Research shows that children enjoy improving their reading skills by practicing reading to animals. With this program, kids are invited to read a story to a book-loving dog. Trained therapy dogs are here every week with their handlers -- and they want to listen to you read!

Caleb, one of our weekly Paws to Read dogs, has died after a long illness. We love our Paws to Read dogs. We loved Caleb. Caleb, we'll miss you.

Submit a photo of your pet reading his or her favorite book! Contest ends at 6 p.m. February 1, 2008. Contest is open to all ages. Top 10 entries in each age group will be displayed in the Children's Services Department to be voted on by the public.
