Wordless Books! Wordless Books! Wordless Books!

Did you know...wordless picture books are a GREAT way to help your child with pre-reading and reading skills.  When you share a wordless book with your child, try taking turns telling the story.  This helps children learn how stories work AND helps teach new words!  Pictured on the left are some of my favorite wordless books -- click on them to find their availability in the library's catalog.

Do you have favorite wordless books?  Click here for a list of more titles!

Surprise Author Visit!!

We were thrilled today to have a surprise guest visit us at the library! Author David Elliott was in the area visiting a school, and decided to drop in and say "Hello!" To say we were pleasantly surprised is an understatement!

David Elliott is the author of many great books, including In the Wild, a book of animal poems. In the Wild was listed on last year's Mock Caldecott reading list, which highlights the best picture books published each year.

Thanks for visiting, Mr. Elliott! And thanks for writing such wonderful books for children!

Exciting Improvements in the Early Learning Center!

Have you visited the Early Learning Center recently? We've made some changes in the books that "live" there.... Instead of having a hodgepodge of picture books, we are being much more selective in deciding what books go in this special space. All the books are designed to reinforce specific fundamentals of Early Literacy. Six color-coded types of picture books are available:
  • Counting Books
  • ABC Books
  • Favorite Stories
  • Rhyming Books
  • Books about Shapes
  • Books about Colors
And, of course, all books are available to be checked out so you can enjoy them with your child at home.

Visit us soon and check it out!

Peter Pan

From now through April 10, the Foellinger-Friemann Botanical Conservatory in Fort Wayne has a special Peter Pan exhibit on display in the Showcase Garden.

Brush up on your knowledge of this classic story by visiting the library and picking up a copy of the
original story written by J. M. Barrie ...

... or one of the many adaptations that have been created over the years, such as this one by pop-up illustrator Robert Sabuda.

Happy Reading!

Mirror by Jeannie Baker

This is a wonderfully unique book, telling simultaneous stories of two families that live thousands of miles apart -- one in Morocco, North Africa, one in Australia.

The pages open opposite each other, giving an interesting perspective to the differences and similarities between the two cultures.

Beautifully detailed collage illustrations help make this book one-of-a-kind.

Check it out and see it for yourself!

Celebrate the Imagination!

I just picked up Antoinette Portis' Not A Box to use in a presentation that I am preparing. I am glad that I did because I had forgotten how wonderful this book is.

The dedication is enough to stir the imagination (and the memory) of any grownup: "To children everywhere sitting in cardboard boxes". From there it only gets better as the cute little rabbit takes the reader through several amazing transformations of his plain, brown cardboard box.

Share this book and a cardboard box with your favorite child today!

What Did YOU Do Today?

In Baby Day! by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, a baby goes about the normal activities of her day, eating, getting dressed, playing and napping.

Try making up a story with your young children about their day -- what color shirt did they choose to wear? What did they eat for lunch? Did they go for a ride in the car?

Activities like these help develop narrative skills, which include the ability to tell and understand stories.

From the New Book Shelf...

Here's a fun new picture book for your preschooler! Bright and bold illustrations highlight each letter of the alphabet, and fun rhymes describe animals that go along with each letter.

What a fun way to help develop your child's letter knowledge and their vocabulary!

What's inside?

As you walk through the Children's Department of the downtown library, do you ever wonder what is inside the big blue bags? Or what is inside the small blue and yellow bags? Or what is inside the boxes in the PTC section?
Well, if you have ever wondered about any of these things, the display in our glass case is for you!
We have displayed the "insides" of these items.
The big blue bags are our Kits for Kids. The Kits for Kids encompass an enormous array of subjects. They hold eight picture books, one DVD or CD and usually a book from our PTC collection.
The smaller blue and yellow bags are our Parent and Child Sets. Each bag focuses on one letter from the alphabet or one number. Inside the Parent and Child Sets are applicable books to help your child learn their letters and manipulatives that might be a lacing letter or a letter stamp. There are also activity sheets to provide ideas to further your child's letter and number knowledge.
The Character Education boxes are from our Parent Teacher Collection. Each box contains a DVD, a picture book, an activity book, an evaluation book and a home ties book. These boxes are great and fun ways to teach character.
Please stop by our Children's Department and let us help you find the perfect kit, set or box!
