This Friday -- Fabulous Fridays Homeschool Book Clubs!

Homeschoolers - this Friday, October 2, from 2:30-3:30, our Fabulous Fridays Book Clubs will be meeting. It's so much fun to talk about books!

Early Reader Round-up - Grades K-2 - will be discussing Little Bear, by Else Holmelund Minarik.









Reading Rocks! - Grades 3-5 - will be talking about Poppy, by Avi.










Do you have other books that are your favorites? Bring them along and share your ideas with the group. Parents are invited too!

Reading Rocks! Wrap-Up

The Reading Rocks! Homeschool Book Club for 3rd through 5th Graders wrapped up its last meeting of the school year on Friday, May 8th, with a discussion of Beverly Cleary's The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

This book received an overwhelmingly positive review from those in attendance, with comments like...

"...there wasn't anything I didn't like about this book..."

"...it was funny..."

"...my favorite part was when Ralph was stuck in the trash can with the motorcycle..."

Reading Rocks! Homeschool Book Club Dictionary

On Friday, homeschoolers in Grades 3-6 gathered at the Main Library to discuss Frindle, by Andrew Clements. We had a very animated discussion about words and where they come from; we even made up a few of our own "new" words, which you will find in the list below. Who knows? ... maybe we'll be seeing one of these words in a dictionary someday!

bickle (noun) \bik-ul\ : a female sibling

blee (noun) \blee\ : the page of a book

blingle (noun) \blin-gl\ : a bell

bloop (noun) \b.l.o.o.p\ : a lizard

chaiea (noun) \ca-ya\ : something that grows from the ground; a flower

Fabulous Fridays Homeschool Book Club!

Last month, the Early Reader Roundup kids met to discuss Good Night, Good Knight by Shelley Moore Thomas. After talking about the book, everyone made a story spinner like the one that you see pictured here.

Reading Rocks! Goes Undercover











On Friday, January 16, the Reading Rocks! Homeschool Book Club for 3rd - 5th Graders met to discuss The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse by Bruce Hale, the first title in the Chet Gecko Mystery series. After a great discussion, we made our own detective disguises.

2008 - The Year in Review

2008 was a busy year in Children's Services! Here are some highlights:


In January 2008 musicians from the Fort Wayne Philharmonic performed pieces from Beethoven Lives Upstairs in the Jeffrey R. Krull Gallery.


In February 2008, the winners of the Your Reading Pet Photo Contest were announced.


In March 2008 over 300 children & adults attended the Homeschool Sneak Preview.


In April 2008 the kids in the Early Reader Roundup group practiced their emotions with Mo Willem's Elephant & Piggie characters.


In May 2008 Time 2 Chime, the homeschool handchime choir, finished off their year of practice with a live performance.


In June 2008, Fritz the GermanFest dog stopped by Children's Services to sign up for the Catch the Reading Bug Summer Reading Program.


In July 2008 kids had the opportunity to meet a ballet dancer from the Fort Wayne Ballet as part of a special SmartStart Preschool Storytime.


In August 2008 kids displayed their good sportsmanship and concentration skills at the Children's Services Chess Tournament.


In September 2008 things got very fancy at the Fancy Nancy Tea Party.


In October 2008 the Art Out of the Box kids painted two cars on the Library Plaza.



In November 2008 hundreds of children and grown ups enjoyed performances by Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players.

On December 31, 2008 we prepared for another wonderful year!

Please remember: The Main Library and all branches of the ACPL will close at 5pm today & will be closed all day tomorrow. Please visit early to pick up your books and other materials. The Main Library will re-open on Friday, January 2nd at 9am. Branch libraries will re-open at 10am.

Early Reader Roundup: On the Go with Mr. & Mrs. Green

The Early Reader Roundup kids met on Friday, September 5th to discuss On the Go with Mr. & Mrs. Green by Keith Baker. After the discussion, the kids created their very own board games with words from the book. Check out more pictures of the program here.

Reading Rocks! Discusses Prince Caspian

Yesterday, the Reading Rocks Homeschool Book Club met and discussed Prince Caspian, by C. S. Lewis. We had a dynamic discussion about characters -- which were our favorites, what qualities did they possess that made them appealing. We also talked about the setting of the story, and the differences between the setting of The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian.

This will be the last meeting of the book club for this school year. During the summer we will be hosting Fabulous Fridays Book Parties. The first will be held on Friday, June 13th at 2:00 p.m.
We'll celebrate Diary of a Fly, Diary of a Spider, and Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin and Harry Bliss with games, crafts, and snacks. Don't miss it!

Early Reader Roundup: I Am Invited to a Party

We made Elephant & Piggie puppets from fun stuff on Willems' Pigeon Presents website, we wrote our own Elephant & Piggie stories, we talked about emotions and even made some faces. Check out more photos of the program on Flickr.

Early Reader Roundup: Amelia Bedelia

Yesterday the Early Reader Roundup book club met to discuss Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish. We talked about silliness, misunderstandings and words that sound the same, but mean different things.

Then we dressed chickens and made big, floppy, Amelia Bedelia inspired hats. See more photos of the wonderful hats here.

Kits for Kids


As you've walked through Children's Services, have you noticed the big, blue bags? They are Kits for Kids. These conveniently packaged, thematically-based kits each contain 8 books for the child, 1 book for the parent or teacher, and 1 DVD/videotape/CD on the subject. Each Kit may be checked out for 3 weeks with your ACPL library card and may be renewed. A complete list of Kits for Kids can be found here. Recent additions to our Kits for Kids selections include classroom/book club sets of books. If you have a group of interested readers who want to explore Little House on the Prairie or Charlotte's Web or Bridge to Terabithia or Because of Winn-Dixie, we now have a Kit just for you. Early Reader Roundup: Hi, Fly Guy!

Yesterday the Early Reader Roundup (Grades K to 2) kids met for our Fabulous Friday Homeschool Book Discussion. We talked about pests and pets as we discussed the book Hi, Fly Guy! by Tedd Arnold. We each made our very own Shrinky Dink pet to take home. Then we created awards for our pets, because every pet is special and deserves an award!

Fabulous Fridays Homeschool Book Club

Today, our two AWESOME Homeschool Book Clubs met for some fun discussion and activities!


Our Early Reader Roundup attendees, in Grades K - 2, had a fun time talking about Frog and Toad Are Friends, by Arnold Lobel. Here are some of the things we did...
  • We decided that Frog and Toad are good friends.
  • We thought that good friends should be nice and funny.
  • We designed our very own buttons!

The Reading Rocks! Homeschool Book Club, for Grades 3 - 6, had a great discussion about Chasing Vermeer, by Blue Balliett. Some of the things attendees liked about this book were...
  • it was a great mystery!
  • it had puzzles to solve
  • they liked the characters, especially Mrs. Sharpe
  • they learned a lot about art
