Kids in Kindergarten through high school read their winning poems and received a trophy for their creative writing efforts. The theater was filled with proud parents, grandparents, family, friends and teachers as kids read their winning poems. Here's the 1st place winning entry in the Kindergarten division by Josh from Emmanuel-St. Michael:

The Recycling Bin

Crawling up the recycling bin,
A spider looks in.
And what does he see?
Treasures collected by me!

Thanks go to the nearly 900 children and young adults who entered this year's contest and to the Friends of the Library whose financial support makes programs like this possible.

Special thanks to all the teachers, parents, and other adults who offer continued positive support to the writing efforts of young people!

If I Could Go Anywhere...

For 25 years, the Allen County Public Library has held an annual poetry contest for kids. This year, nearly 900 kids and young adults entered the contest. This year's theme was If I Could Go Anywhere.

Here's the winning First Place entry in the Kindergarten division, written by homeschooler Shira Hansen:

If I could go anywhere, I would
like to go to Barbieland
and stay there for one week
And when it's time to go, I would
sing them a lullaby
and come back after every
breakfast, lunch and dinner!

All winning poets in Kindergarten through Grade 5 will be honored at a special Awards Ceremony to be held at 10:30 this Saturday morning at the Main Library. The kids will each be invited to read their winning poem, receive a trophy for their writing efforts, and enjoy some cookies and punch. Family and friends of the poets, as well as anyone interested in supporting children's creative writing efforts, are welcome to attend. A booklet of all the winning poems will also be available.
