Celebrate butterflies with stories and activities and then head outside to Library Plaza to let the butterflies go! Then come back in at 7pm for the Mark's Ark program in the theater on Lower Level 2. Mark always brings interesting animals, we've already seen a baby alligator, a chinchilla, and snakes!

Bug Pizza for Dinner?

As it says on the first page of Bug-a-licious, by Meish Goldish, "One eater's 'yuck!' is another eater's 'yum!' More than 1,700 kinds of insects are eaten in over 100 countries around the world." Check this book out and learn where to hop on a plane and travel for a taste of Wasp Crackers, a handful of Honey Ants, or a crunchy snack of Dried Stink Bugs. And you may be surprised to find out that you don't have to go very far to lick a Cricket Lollipop.

Bugs are Insects by Anne Rockwell

Click here to find this book in the Library Catalog! So what are bugs? Do you REALLY know what makes a bug, a bug? Did you know that not all insects are bugs, but all bugs are insects?

If you are a little unsure about the answers to these questions, check out Bugs Are Insects by Anne Rockwell. This book is a Stage One Let's Read and Find Out Science Book, so the facts are explained so that preschool & kindergarten children can understand them. I learned a few things from this book, maybe you will too!

We Have Chrysalises!

Our Painted Lady caterpillars have been growing and growing and growing, and have now all formed their chrysalises. During the chrysalis stage, caterpillars make their transformation from a crawling caterpillar to a fluttering butterfly. Be sure to visit Children's Services to see
with your own eyes this amazing stage in the life cycle of the Painted Lady butterfly!

This is a close-up view of one of the chrysalises.

This is the view of the inside of our butterfly tent, with several chrysalises on display.
