Snow! Snow! and More Snow!

Folks here in northern Indiana are gearing up for yet another round of snowfall -- what do you do to prepare for snow days? I suggest you add a visit to the library to your list of destinations as you travel today to stock up on your supplies. Check out a cookbook and try a new recipe...or a craft book to learn a new skill or brush up on an old one...or a book of games to play together... or all of the above!

The possibilities are endless...

The Story of Snow

Do you ever wonder how snowflakes form? Is it true that no two snowflakes are alike? What do snowflakes look like
UP CLOSE?

If you read The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter's Wonder, written by Mark Cassino with Jon Nelson, Ph. D. , you'll find out the answers to these questions, and more.

At the end of the book, you can even learn how to catch your own snow crystals for your own snowy observations. Fascinating stuff!

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

Take a wild guess!

Can you guess how much snow (total) we will have in December?
All throughout December we have been collecting guesses to answer the question "How much snow (total) do you think we'll have in Fort Wayne by the end of December?" Visit Children's Services at the Main Library to drop in your guess and to check out the updated totals.

The closest or correct guesses will go into a drawing and three lucky winners will receive a magnetic storybook kit!

Contest ends at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30th,2008

Snowy Day storytime is tomorrow at 10:30

The weather is unseasonably warm today, but the weather forecasters are predicting cold and snow for tomorrow -- Wednesday -- just in time for our Snowy Day storytime! Preschoolers and their favorite grownups are invited to come to the Main Library for fun stories, rhymes, and songs all about snow at 10:30 tomorrow. (We might even make some snow for you to take home!)

If you want to make your own snowflakes to get ready, check out this blog post for a variety of snowflake ideas.

Make Your Own Snowflakes!

It's Monday, and the Library is open, but many schools have another snow day!! Maybe you've just come inside from playing out in the snow, or you need to warm up with an inside activity, why not make some paper snowflakes? Here are some cool websites that show you how:

Make-A-Flake is an online snowflake-maker. Just use the virtual scissors to create tons of snowflakes -- no paper required!

Or, if you prefer real paper, try this site: Make a Snowflake.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Snow Day!

The Library is closed today due to the winter snow storm and a county-wide Level Two Snow Emergency. We'll be open tomorrow, ready to help you find lots of good books to enjoy. Enjoy the snow!

Falling Snow
by Anonymous

See the pretty snowflakes
Falling from the sky;
On the wall and housetops
Soft and thick they lie.

On the window ledges,
On the branches bare;
Now how fast they gather,
Filling all the air.

Look into the garden,
Where the grass was green;
Covered by the snowflakes,
Not a blade is seen.

Now the bare black bushes
All look soft and white,
Every twig is laden,
What a pretty sight!
