Mary Ann Hoberman has been named the second Children's Poet Laureate. Her job for the next two years will be to instill a love of poetry in children, something that she has been working on for her entire career.For more information about the Children's Poet Laureate position, click here. When my mother taught fourth grade, Mary Ann Hobermann's poems in "Yellow, Butter, Purple Jelly, Red Jam, Black Bread" were favorites.
Here is the title poem and one oft-read aloud by the children in the class:
Yellow butter, purple jelly, red jam, black bread.
Spread it thick,
Say it quick.
Yellow butter, purple jelly, red jam, black bread.
Spread it thicker,
Say it quicker.
Yellow butter, purple jelly, red jam, black bread.
Now repeat it,
While you eat it,
Yellow butter, purple jelly, red jam, black bread.
Don't talk
With your mouth full!
