A Refreshed Classic

I just found this fantastically illustrated version of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island on our new book shelves.

John Lawrence, the brilliant artist who brought the world This Little Chick has refreshed this classic with spectacular (and sometimes disturbing) vinyl cut illustrations. Don't miss it.

Scream and Run Away!

I am extremely disturbed by everything produced by the repellent Lemony Snicket. This hideous video filled me with hopelessness and despair. Please don't watch it. It includes rare footage of the awful author, so you know that you really don't want to see it; his image is worrisome. And don't visit this website to find more ominous content. Don't. Please.

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

I can't believe that I haven't shared my favorite book of the year yet! I read When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead months and months ago and I still think about the story and the characters quite often. These entirely believable, well developed, fully realized characters work through their normal problems and strangely enough some of them travel through time. This is much more than a time travel story; it is a story about people and you will love them all before the end.

Please, do yourself a favor and drop in on their world. And if you would like, tell us what you thought on the ACPL Mock Newbery blog, or just visit and read comments about this title that are far more articulate than mine.

Summer Journals

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney, and its sequels, are so popular that the books, CDs, and Playaways are nearly always checked out here at Children's Services. If you enter the word "journal" in the advanced search card catalog and also enter Children's Services in the location search box, you will find 214 other books that have something to do with journals. Many are chapter books. If you're waiting to read one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, maybe you would like to read one of the other journal books. And whether or not you're a "wimpy kid," maybe you'd like to keep a diary of your own this summer. A Child's Book Review: The BFG by Roald Dahl

The BFG by Roald Dahl was reviewed by 4-year-old Helena:

"That was pretty fun. The giants won't eat us and they went away. That they went
away is a pretty good thing. Sophie and the BFG are my favorite
characters. The BFG talked pretty silly."
